Excluding Weekends from Cycle TIme

Overview

Development teams typically do not work every day of the week. Most organizations observe weekends as non-working days. LinearB provides the option to exclude weekends from cycle time calculations, ensuring a more accurate representation of team performance.

How Excluding Weekends Affects Cycle Time

By enabling this feature, weekend hours will not be included in cycle time calculations in team and company dashboards. However, weekend work will still be flagged and visible in individual branch activity logs.

Enabling Weekend Exclusion

1. Navigate to Settings > Company Settings.

2. Under the General tab, toggle on the Exclude Cycle Time calculation on weekends option.

3. Select your company’s typical weekend days.

4. Click Save Settings.

 

This setting applies globally across all teams. However, individual teams can configure their specific weekend days in team settings.

Configuring Team-Specific Weekends

Once the weekend exclusion is enabled:

1. Select a team from the Team drop-down.

2. Navigate to Settings > [name of Team] Settings

3. In the Team Settings page, adjust the weekend days specific to each team.

4. Click Save Settings to apply the changes.

Impact on Cycle Time Calculation

Work Done Over the Weekend

When work occurs on weekends, LinearB includes only weekday working hours in team and global metric calculations. Weekend activity remains visible in the Git Activity drill-down for transparency and auditing purposes.

Example: 

• A team's working week is configured Monday to Friday 

• If a developer picks up a PR on Friday at 20:00 and resumes work on Monday at 08:00, the pickup time is recorded as 12 hours instead of 50 hours.

Work Carried Over the Weekend

If a pull request (PR) remains open over the weekend, LinearB will exclude weekend hours from the cycle time calculation.

Example: 

• A team's working week is configured Monday to Friday 

• If a PR is opened on Friday at 20:00 and picked up on Monday at 08:00, the cycle time will reflect 12 hours instead of 50 hours.

 

The cycle time will be updated in your team and company dashboards, as well as in relevant metrics reports within the Metrics tab. However, when viewing individual branches in the Activity tab, the full cycle time, including weekends, will still be displayed for complete visibility.

The All Teams and individual team dashboards will display cycle time calculations that exclude weekend days.

Metrics View

When viewing daily cycle time breakdowns, weekends will be marked with a cycle time of 0. If you click one of these 0m values, you will be brought into the Activity View, which will behave as specified below.

Activity View

• Individual branch activity logs will still display the full cycle time, including weekends.

• Branches spanning a weekend will be flagged with a purple indicator to highlight the weekend portion.
